Description
Spain – Banco of Spain – 1938 – 5000 Pesetas – An extremely rare and visually stunning Banco de España progressive die proof engraver’s test strike for the reverse of a five thousand pesetas note, circa 1938, in green with reproduction of the painting ‘La Vicaria’ by Mariano Fortuny, engraved by Edward T. Dawson, on paper/card (very fine/extremely fine, some edge and corner creasing). Note: Edward T. Dawson worked for Bradbury Wilkinson & Co 1935-1946. Completed specimens of this note are known, but only in very small numbers. Provenance: from the personal archive of the late Alan Dow, master banknote engraver to Bradbury Wilkinson & Co and the Bank of England.
